A resort should be an escape. Someplace that allows you to forget the world beyond their borders. At times the city of Bangkok can be a bit overwhelming for the untested. Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok truly fits the definition of an escape. Combining the famous Thai hospitality with world class amenities, has positioned Shangri-La as the premier luxury resort in Bangkok

Combining Tradition with Modernity to Create Excellence

Shangri-La Hotel is separated into two wings. They are managed under the same name but have separate check ins and a few minor differences. I found the Shangri-La wing to be quite a bit more modern while Krungthep Wing was a more decorative. Each has rooms of VERY high quality but it seems to me that Krungthep caters to business travelers while Shangri-La is for the leisure traveler. I recommend you request a room in Shangri-La if on vacation though both are great.

We stayed in the Shangri-La wing. Our room was very modern with stunning views of the Chao Phraya River. Very spacious with built in furniture and amenities. Perfect for a single guest or couple. The property also has very spacious family style suites with pull out beds and separated rooms.

Although not quite up to the standards of newly built properties, the rooms at Shangri-La are very well maintained, updated, and designed.

Thai Hospitality on Full Display

A property can have the nicest rooms, best location, and greatest food on the planet but if the staff isn’t equally as good the place just isn’t worth visiting. Shangri-La Hotel doesn’t have this issue. They employ some of the most caring, helpful, and professional people in the industry.

During my three days at the resort I NEVER walked past an employee that didn’t say hello or ask if I needed anything. Not once. From the grounds keepers to the management. It catches you off guard at first and I thought it was only me but my companion mentioned it as well. The staff here truly cares about their customers .

If you visit this property for no other reason but the staff, you won’t leave disappointed.

World Class Services on Site

Shangri-La is an escape. A resort  where you never have to leave the grounds and all of your needs are catered to. With two pools, a workout facility, a shopping avenue, and several restaurants, Shangri-La has everything you need and more.  And did I mention an onsite medical facility with staff? They can take care of your medical needs right there.

The restaurants are world class. I had one of the best dinners of my life at Shang Palace and one of the best breakfast buffets I’ve seen outside of Las Vegas. From Italian to Cantonese, Shangri-La has something for most people’s pallet. And don’t forget to try their traditional Thai restaurant Salathip. Truly an architectural gem and experience unto itself.

One of the truly unique facilities onsite is their Chocolate Boutique located near the main lobby of Shangri-La wing. I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about this place being anymore than your average candy store. Oh was I wrong. EVERYTHING here is made of chocolate. The chocolatiers here are truly artist making everything from race cars to makeup out of chocolate. You’ll need to do a few laps in their stunning pool to work off those calories.

There are two pools on the property. You can only use the pool in whatever wing you’re staying in. I found the Shangri-La pool to be vastly superior. Larger, better views, and better sun. Again, Krungthep is far more decorative. Each pool has a dedicated staff to assist you with tools, water service, and food orders. Very attentive service.

Plenty of Entertainment to Explore

Shangri-La Lounge Singer

Unfortunately I can’t remember the talented woman’s name but i’ll be sure to get it and update this review. Shangri-La wing has one of the most soulful jazz singers you’ll find in Thailand singing every night. We had heard about her from a hotel owner we met a few weeks earlier and just happened to be coming in from a day out. Singing traditional jazz tunes with a modern twist, her powerful voice fills the Shangri-La lounge area with soul and class. You have to hear this woman sing. I was told she’s there every night from 7-11pm. Order a drink and tapas, put your feet up, and enjoy.

Fish Feeders

At times I can be a kid. Enjoying the simple things in life. We were allowed to check in a bit early and decide to walk the massive property. While walking along the custom pier, overlooking Chao Phraya River, we noticed a basket full of bread. It was to feed the five different fish types living in the river and boy do these things eat. Literally jumping out of the water all around to get the bread and bugs. Quite a site for city dwelling guest and children. Just another small thing Shangri-La does right.

Taxi Boat

Shangri-La offers their guest a free boat every hour going to Asiatique. A river side shopping and theatre district. You can easily spend two days here enjoying the cool night life. With restaurants, bars, and a market, Asiatique offers Shangri-La Hotel guest a great place to spend a few dollars on souvenirs.

Horizon Club

The Horizon Club isn’t much different than most loyalty programs. One thing does stand out though. They actually have a CLUB and three floors of exclusive rooms. Long gone are the days of exclusivity at most hotels around the world. At Shangri-La it’s alive and kicking. With personalized service from the airport to your room, Shangri-La truly takes care of their loyal clientele.

A Bit of Something for Everyone

Couples on their honeymoon and business travelers alike will love Shangri-La Hotel. Families may find it a bit adult oriented for their kids and teens may get a bit bored as it’s not particularly catered to them. 20 something partiers need not apply either. Shangri-La hotel usually wraps the evening up around midnight.

Older travelers will thoroughly enjoy Shangri-La Hotel and I plan to book this place for my mother and aunts visit to Bangkok. Luxurious, quiet, safe, and accommodating, Shangri-La truly is a resort committed to the comfort to the mature traveler.

On a side note, this hotel is amazingly affordable when compared to it’s western counterparts.
