Chi, The Spa @ Shangri-La Hotel Review

                  My expectations of Chi were high. After visiting the facility the day before, I was ready so see “behind the curtain” per say. I wasn’t disappointed. Attentive service, relaxing ambiance, and varied treatment makes this a fun experience for anyone looking to beat the travel grind. From the moment you arrive the staff at Chi Spa go to great lengths to ensure you are comfortable and relaxed. Beginning with the excellent decor.

DECOR

              Chi Spa has a unique Thai ambiance and the decor reflects that. Chi Spa is a spa brand produced by Shangri-La that can be found at most of their properties. Each property has a distinct style and signature. Chi Spa @Shangri-La Bangkok embraces it’s Thai roots.

               Upon entry you are greeted with low lights and open space. You won’t find any clutter here as the theme is minimal. Chi Spa’s reception area appears once you exit the elevator on their floor. Greeting you with a traditional Thai bow and expression you are ushered into the orientation and waiting area. Here you’ll find candle accented mood lighting and aromatic flowers that almost put you to sleep.  They have their intended effect.

                Once you complete some light orientation forms (pain areas and what to avoid) you are taken to your own spa SUITE. Yes. I said SUITE. Not room. I’ll get into details later on that. Each suite is not only decorated in stunning detail but serves as a homage to traditional Thai massage and treatment. The decor perfectly accents the services offered and their execution.

SERVICES

                Chi Spa offers dozens of different treatments for men and women. From facials and massages to hot stone and aroma treatments. I opted for the full body Aroma Massage followed by the Thai Herbal Compress Massage. Your experience begins as soon as you walk through the door.

                While filling out your forms you are presented with a cup of fresh Jasmine and Lemongrass tea. This would set the mood for the rest of my day. Light and smooth. Upon finishing my tea and forms I’m escorted to one of a few rooms on the main floor. The lights are low and air smells of fresh cut flowers. I am graciously greeted by the therapist that will have my body and experience in here hands or the next couple of hours.

                Nina Nanthip welcomed be with a traditional Thai greeting and immediately made me feel at ease with her pure grace and warmth. She briefly went over what to expect with each procedure as well as my medical history. Nina gave me a brief tour of the facility and then presented me with a rob and slippers to wear.           

                Each suite is totally independent and exclusive to the client. I had total privacy. Nina left the room while I changed although she didn’t need to. The changing room is closed in with a private bathroom. After changing I meet Nina next to the pool (YES THE SUITE HAS A POOL) where she washes my feet. Using exfoliates and aromatic oils I was treated to a divine introduction to the Chi Spa treatment.

                We then proceeded to the massage table. I have to say, Nina is a master at her craft. She combined traditional Thai massage techniques with more conventional western ones in what Chi Spa calls the Thai Herbal Compress massage. The combination resulted in a unique massage experience that left me floating and wanting more. The massage involves a massage with a heated compress made from traditional that herbs dating back 500 years. It truly wakes your muscles. I would have been happy had my day ended there but It was only half done.

                Next was the Aroma Wellness Massage. Using aromatic Thai oils, Nina performed a massage that has elements of Swedish, Shiatsu, and Reflexology.  The elements complimented each other well. The oils loosen the muscles and soften the skin. My body felt lighter as all the tension and pain had been washed away in a sea of heat and aromas. The two massages combined for an extraordinary experience that culminated with an optional bath/shower (including all the possible toiletries and hair care products you could ever need) and warm tea.

 Staff

             Chi Spas staff have a level of professionalism and attention that other spas should strive for. Mimicking the overall hospitable nature of Thai culture, Chi’s team have created a quiet sanctuary for customers to enjoy and relax in. Special acknowledgment goes to Nina Nanthip. My therapist.

Nina ensured my comfort level throughout was high and that I was thoroughly taken care of. She explained every aspect of each procedure and also asked where I wouldn’t like to be touched. This may seem minor but massage is a very intimate experience. As a client you have complete control over how and where you’re touch for maximum comfort.  The welcoming staff and true professionalism shine through in this experience.

VALUE

There is no question that the price point at Chi Spa pales in comparison to what you actually receive. Prices range from 1200-3900baht for services similar to mine. Facials range from 2800-4500baht. These prices are very comparable to similar spas in Bangkok that don’t offer the level of service that Chi Spa does. Service is the difference. Bangkok has several excellent therapist but very few “experiences” like Chi Spa. For the money, It’s worth it to spend an afternoon being pampered.

WRAP UP

Shangri-La Hotel prides itself on being an oasis for their customers.  A place where you can relax and be pampered. Chi Spa takes that commitment and dedication to another level. The service and amenities offered at Chi Spa will give you an experience that isn’t likely to be matched anytime soon. Visit Chi Spa for the attentive service, outstanding therapist, and overall professionalism and quality care. Jetlag, shopping fatigue, or just body aches are no match for the Chi Spa experience.
