Copenhagen is one of those unique places which caused me to contemplate my narrative closely. A place that can’t be described using flattering prose alone. Copenhagen is a city that really caught me by surprise. For years, I’ve heard about the open and progressive attitude they have toward the LGBT community. I heard the same about Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Berlin. Granted, those are all wonderful cities. But they pale in comparison regarding how open and tolerant citizens are to the LGBT community. And Pride is a perfect example.
I attended Copenhagen Pride and earlier in the summer Barcelona Pride with the #MyGayPride campaign. I also visited Amsterdam and Berlin recently. What I saw in Copenhagen was nothing short of inspiring. That city opened up and embraced the LGBT community in a way I’ve never seen and showed me how a community can treat LGBT peoples. Tolerance IS possible. It is possible to be respectful even if you don’t agree with someones lifestyle choices. And honestly, Pride isn’t only for the LGBT community. Copenhagen residents used it as an opportunity to embrace their fellow residents and enjoy the last days of summer.
Copenhagen Pride was a photographers dream. Not only was it vibrant and colorful, but drew people from all over the city. Including U.S. Ambassador Rufus Gifford and Husband Dr. Stephen DeVincent. Everyone was kind and open to the camera. To the point where I took the most shots of any event in a single day. EVER. It was a nightmare to edit them down, but here we are. Be warned…….I shot a lot. Enjoy and be sure to share. The more love I get with these photo essays the more I’ll shoot the,
I attended Barcelona Pride as part of the outstanding #myGayPride campaign withGayStarNews and 100+ other Ambassadors. This trip was partially sponsored by several great companies, but a few I want to highlight. SAS Airlines which provided me with flights to and from Copenhagen and participated in the parade as you can see above. Also, the wonderful Andersen Hotel. Seriously one of my favorite hotels now. Amazing staff and great location. Plus great taste in art. I present to you the amazing Freddie Mercury.
